Walking
Friday night was pretty special. Rhett Miller puts on a hell of a show, even just a guy with an acoustic guitar and unnaturally good hair. I went up to Oak Street for a minute before the show started and ran into Ben and Tyler and Phil who were all getting ready for the show. We hung out for a little bit and they went to eat so I was going to walk over but I ran into Conor and Courtney who were out and about so we got a drink and hung out for a bit as well. Sometimes you need to run into friends and that was absolutely the case on Friday.
They show was packed when I got over there, Ben and Tyler and Phil had walked in a few minutes before so we chatted for a bit before the show started. Ben has talked to me about how much he loves the Old 97s and Rhett Miller, I didn’t really understand the fascination but one man, live was pretty amazing. I have a special appreciation for people who can get up in front of a packed bar/club and instantly captivate the audience. There were people singing along and staring up at the stage, the last time I saw something like that was when Dave Bazan came through the last few times. Rhett played for 90 minutes without a break, plowing through a bunch of band and solo tunes and telling stories and just kinda being what seems like a really nice guy. Ben wanted to get a picture so we waited in line until we got up to him and Ben just asked if he could give him a hug. Photo proof.
We went back over to Oak for a minute and I drove home, promising myself to get up and in the morning.
I did get in a run, it was 10k and humid and it felt pretty good. I walked back up to the square to go get signatures for the Turkey Trot and ended up walking around with Ben instead of Buddy this year so that every group would have 2. After we got the signatures, we walked over to get some food and back to Eastside for a drink or two. I was planning to go take a nap but I got a “come over” message from Storie so I headed off to Spiderweb HQ for a couple hours and got to preview the new Wake and Bake item fresh out of the oven. I had seen Trey earlier in the day walking around and I knew that his band was playing at 4 at the Denton Blues Fest so I made my exit and headed down that way.
Trey’s band was fun and it was really hot so I was happy to walk across the street to the DCBC Oktoberfest to catch Erica and Cyrus in their debut performance as Mom As a Teenager. I’ve known Erica for years and it was so fun to get to see her breaking new ground in life, performing with a band for the first time. Erica has been so supportive of my life changes, knowing when to be nice and when to be a huge bitch about whatever is going on at the moment and we’ve known each other long enough that I can circle back and say “thanks for being a huge bitch, I needed that at the time.” I like to do my best Friend As a Cheerleader when friends are taking big risks and so it was great to see her do a thing that was terrifying and do it well. After the first song or two, things really opened up and Erica started to have fun and let loose, the show was great. I also got to play with her kiddo for a bit while the parents were trying to have a round of “good show” so it was a good way to end the night. I went home early and got ready to turn in early for a trail run with the DARC crew in the morning.
